WATCH: MMA prodigy goes from play fighting to podium finishes

Fifteen-year-old Kobus Stander from Alberton has risen swiftly in MMA, earning a spot on the SA team and gearing up to compete at the Youth World Championships in Abu Dhabi.

Kobus Stander, a 15-year-old learner from Marais Viljoen, has made his mark in the world of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) by being selected for the SA MMA team.

Born in Alberton and growing up in Witbank before returning to Alberton’s Verwoerd Park, Kobus’ journey to the top has been quick because he only started training at the Valhalla Gym in February and has only been competing since early 2025.

Kobus’ introduction to MMA began when he was just three, play-fighting with his dad. As he grew older, his passion for the sport intensified, and he began training with coach Shane at Valhalla MMA gym in Alberton North.

Under Shane’s guidance, he developed his skills in striking and wrestling, becoming a well-rounded fighter.

Kobus competed at the SA National MMA competition, where he won a gold medal.

“I want to be a well-rounded fighter, so I train very hard,” Kobus said, echoing his coach’s sentiments.

“I train on my own at home on my punching bag, and I also do mental training.”

His dedication and hard work have clearly paid off as he prepares to represent Alberton and SA at the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) Youth World Championships in Abu Dhabi this month.

“I am grateful for my coach and parents. Without them, none of this would have been possible,” Kobus said.

“I believe I will win at the IMMAF because I am training hard and passionate about what I do,” he continued.

Kobus’ confidence stems from his extensive training regimen, which includes watching fights to gain valuable insights and tips.

According to Kobus, MMA is a sport for everyone, but competing requires more than desire.

“You need passion to fight,” he emphasised.

“I train a lot and also watch fights to get tips.”

As a Grade 10 learner, Kobus has faced challenges balancing his academic responsibilities with his fighting commitments.

“My last tournament was during exams and I missed the last exam, but my school helpfully accommodated me,” said Kobus.

Despite these hurdles, he remains focused on his goals, driven by his love for the sport. With his selection to the SA MMA team, Kobus is an inspiration to young athletes everywhere, proving that anything is possible with hard work, determination and passion.
