Alberton’s Gianno Ferreira races ahead as one of South Africa’s rising motocross stars

Alberton’s Gianno Ferreira becomes one of South Africa’s youngest senior motocross riders.

At just eight years old, Gianno Ferreira is making waves in the motocross world, proving that age is no barrier to passion or talent.

According to his mother, Fatima, the journey started in the simplest way.

“Gianno was always watching motocross videos on YouTube. The more he watched, the more he wanted to ride. He kept asking us, and eventually we decided to support his dream,” she says.

Rapid progress and early achievements

His formal motocross journey began in 2024, the year his love for the sport truly took off.

Fatima explains that his progress in such a short time surprised everyone.

“In one year, he made huge strides,” she says. “By 2025, he was already competing in the inland championships, interprovincials, nationals, and even representing Motocross South Africa as a senior rider. He was the youngest senior rider there.”

Representing South Africa on a major stage

Gianno’s standout moment this year was being selected to represent South Africa at the MX of Nations in Zimbabwe.

Only five riders per country are chosen.

“That was such a proud moment for us. For him to be selected at his age shows how much potential he has.” Fatima says.

Motocross is where his heart is

Gianno’s own love for the sport is unwavering.

“My bike is my happy place. A track makes my heart happy. Come sun or rain, that is where I want to be,” Gianno says.

Looking ahead to 2026, Gianno has already secured impressive results: second at the national championships, third in the Gauteng Inland Series and first in the interprovincial competitions.

Fatima believes this is just the beginning. “He has done so much already. He is determined, he is focused, and he absolutely loves every moment on that bike,” she says.

Strong support pushing him forward

Gianno is also grateful for the support of his sponsor, 6D Helmets, a brand known for prioritising safety and performance.

Fatima adds, “The support means a lot. It helps him grow and gives him what he needs to keep pushing forward.”
