WATCH: Greater Alberton school athletes shine despite rain-delayed championships

Young competitors from Alberton, Thokoza, and Eden Park delivered outstanding performances after weather disruptions shifted the championships. The event focused on selecting athletes for the upcoming district finals.

The community gathered in high spirits as the Alberton Athletics Championships took place on February 14 and 16 at Laerskool Generaal Alberts, the host venue.

Originally scheduled to begin on February 13, the school postponed the event due to heavy rain and the athletics resumed once conditions improved.

The championships brought together young athletes from across Alberton, Thokoza, Eden Park, and several private schools, celebrating determination, sportsmanship, and emerging sporting excellence.

Learners competed in a wide range of track and field events, including sprints, middle-distance races, relays, long jump, high jump, and shot put.

Spectators lined the sidelines, cheering enthusiastically as participants demonstrated remarkable dedication and a competitive spirit.

Organisers confirmed there were no overall results, as the Alberton Championships serve primarily to determine which athletes will progress to the upcoming district championships.

The focus remained on participation, performance, and identifying promising talent rather than team standings.

Coaches and educators commended the athletes for their discipline and perseverance, highlighting the importance of school sports in building confidence, teamwork, and healthy lifestyles.

Many participants achieved personal bests, while others gained valuable experience competing in a supportive yet challenging environment.

The Alberton Athletics Championships once again proved to be a cornerstone of the local sporting calendar, uniting neighbouring communities and inspiring the next generation of athletes to strive for excellence.
