Brackenhurst Bowling Club hosts Gauteng Open bowls tournament

Players from across South Africa gathered at Brackenhurst Bowling Club as the club hosted the mixed pairs competition of the Perfect Delivery Gauteng Open one of the country’s biggest lawn bowls tournaments.

Brackenhurst Bowling Club was one of 10 host venues for the opening day of the Perfect Delivery Gauteng Open on July 3 as bowlers from across South Africa competed in the mixed pairs competition.

Recognised as the country’s biggest lawn bowls tournament, the Gauteng Open is being held every weekend throughout July.

The tournament features competitions for men, women, juniors, visually impaired bowlers, physically disabled bowlers and open events, making it one of the most inclusive sporting events in South Africa.

A total of 74 mixed pairs sections took to the greens on July 3, with matches played at Brackenhurst Bowling Club, Alberton Bowls Club, Benoni Bowls Club, Benoni Lake Club, Boksburg Bowls Club, Delville Germiston Bowls Club, Edenvale Bowls Club, Morningside Country Club, Northmead Bowls Club and Reading Country Club.

Players are competing for Gauteng Open titles as well as valuable provincial and Bowls South Africa ranking points.

The tournament headquarters is at Delville Germiston Bowling Club, while Edenvale Bowls Club serves as the official sub-headquarters.

Brackenhurst Bowling Club was selected to host matches after meeting the high standards required for provincial tournaments, including the quality of its greens and facilities.

“It’s an honour to have them. It’s a real privilege to host such a prestigious tournament. This year it is actually bigger than the national tournament. It’s massive and it’s a pleasure to represent Alberton,” he said.

The Perfect Delivery Gauteng Open will continue every weekend throughout July, with players of all ages and abilities battling in a tournament that celebrates skill, sportsmanship and community.
