WATCH | Ghost town: Joburg South streets empty ahead of June 30 anti-immigration march
Businesses and vendors closed out of caution while a heavy police presence is expected as the officially approved march takes place across parts of South Africa.
Several officially approved anti-illegal immigration marches are set to take place across South Africa today (June 30), with a heavy police presence expected to monitor the demonstrations and maintain public order.
In parts of Joburg South, many businesses and vendors have closed out of caution, leaving roads unusually quiet and creating scenes reminiscent of the COVID-19 lockdown.
Joburg South feels like lockdown all over again. The streets are empty, with few people and almost no cars.
It’s strange and unreal. The morning crawl down Heidelberg Road from Alberton to Steeledale is gone; today it’s a clear run.
Southern Klipriviersberg Road to Moffat View and South Hills is dead silent, with most factories shut.
Outspan Road towards Karina Place is also quiet. South Hills Clinic remains open, but a security guard now locks the gate behind everyone who enters.
Nephin Road is deserted, and on South Rand Road towards Linmeyer there’s no one in sight.
For now, most of the South appears calm, with no incidents reported.
