The fight to promote women’s football is an uphill battle, but a group of dedicated administrators from Alexandra are not backing down.

The administrators of the Women’s Diski Challenge are now calling for financial support to make a ground-breaking trip to Harare, Zimbabwe, where they hope to lay the groundwork for expanding women’s football in the region.

“There are a lot of talented young girls in Alexandra but the opportunities are limited. We see this trip as a way to network with stakeholders in Zimbabwe, learn from each other and lay the groundwork for future collaboration that will help grow the game for all women.

“Once we have established that relationship then we will take players to Zimbabwe and they also may bring their players this side,” said Shawe.

The secretary general of Maningi Youth Soccer Academy Maketo Muqitshwa said, “During the visit, we will be able to take the girls through some training sessions and facilitate some key educational sessions about women’s football.

“In addition, the girls will be able to meet some key stakeholders in Zimbabwe football like the women personnel at the Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) and other clubs.”

The administrators said they need about R16 000 in funding for the flights as they will be offered accommodation, food and transport during their stay in Zimbabwe.
