Alex rugby girls are Italy bound

ALEXANDRA – My wish is to see these township kids lend bursaries to achieve their rugby and educational ambitions, says Moloi.

Three girls from Alexandra who play rugby for the Alex Wolves U16 team have been selected for Gauteng Lions that will tour Italy next year.

The three girls are Sizile Mdunge (14), a Grade 7 learner of Carter Primary School; Fanele Mwela (14), in Grade 8 at Northview High School; and Patience Dikotla (15), in Grade 9 at KwaBhekilanga High School.

“I am happy for the three selected girls as this proves there is something right that we are doing for rugby in Alexandra. I wish them all the best on their trip to Italy and hope they will come back with a thing or two to show off for their trip,” said their coach Jack Moloi.

“It also silences our adversaries who often thought there was no way we could play rugby in Alex as there were no facilities for the game,” added Alexandra Rugby Football Club founder and manager Elias Mpengu.

Mpengu said he had been discouraged by some people when he first disclosed the idea of starting a rugby club in Alex but he never took it to heart and decided to soldier on with his idea which was now paying dividends.

“We have a number of boys that have bagged rugby scholarships and are doing well at various schools such as KES, and at Wanderers. “This is all I wanted to do when I started the rugby club, to open doors for the disadvantaged children in the township,” Mpengu added.

For his part, Moloi said he was working hard to polish the rugby skills of the boys and girls in his teams so they could earn bursaries to further not just their rugby careers but their educational ambitions as well.
