Alex father’s hopes for finality on murdered son’s case dashed
There has been yet another postponement in the case of murdered Sandtonview High School boy Thando Khumalo.
The hopes of an Alex father to begin to heal and find closure for his murdered son were dealt yet another severe blow when the sentencing of convicted killer Peter Mphulo Magolego was postponed to September 19.

This followed the unavailability of Magolego’s lawyer who sent a message through the state prosecutor Godfrey Maphiri to say he was unwell and requested a postponement of his client’s sentencing. In addition, Magolego said the social worker’s report had not been finalised.
The court then granted a postponement to allow Maphiri to contact the social worker and lawyers for an appropriate date, which the parties then decided upon as September 19.
Magolego was not available either on earlier dates as he had an armed robbery and murder case at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court and another murder case in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court as well to attend to.

The murdered Sandton View High School boy Thando Khumalo’s father, Sipho Masebe, made yet another fruitless journey from Tsutsumani to the Alexandra Regional Court as he had done for the past three years, hoping for finality in the murder case.
Masebe, an accomplished Alex actor and businessman, who has endured eight sentencing postponements in this case, said he was tired of the unending postponements but at the same time was hopeful finality could be reached so the family could start with the healing process.
“I am keeping my fingers crossed that after today’s postponement [September 5], the next court date [September 19] will be the D-Day that murderer Magolego will finally hear his fate on this matter,” Masebe said.
Thando (20) was Masebe’s adopted son as instructed by Masebe’s late sister just before she passed on. He was fatally shot at close range after a chase by Magolego following a road rage incident on August 28, 2022.
The Grade 11 learner was returning to his home in Tsutsumani Village in the early morning hours, after a night out with six of his friends, when he met his tragic death on the corner of 12th Avenue and Hofmeyr Street.
