Sexual offences up by 56,3% in Alex per 2nd quarter crime stats
Second quarter 2024/2025 crime statistics reveal that Alex is stabilising in some areas, but getting worse in others, especially when the crime is perpetrated against women or children.
The second quarter of the crime statistics released on November 25 by the SAPS for 2024/2025 depict an ever increasingly dangerous situation faced by women as they walk the streets of Alexandra, alert to the potential of experiencing contact crimes.
Contact crimes include murder, sexual offences and assaults, rape, and attempts at each, including assault with intention to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), and robberies with aggravating circumstances – like carjackings.

The statistics show a 56,3% increase in sexual offences reported at the Alex Police Station, reflecting a staggering picture of how sexual crimes have increased within the community.
Cases of rape, reported to the community’s police, have increased by 12 counts to 40 incidences in the current quarter. Additionally, cases of sexual assault have also risen between the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 second quarter findings by 5 counts, from three to eight citations.
National statistics reflect a 3,1% increase in crimes characterising sexual offences in Gauteng, which is troubling – albeit less than the 3,7% increase in Free State, and the 5,8% rise of cases in Mpumalanga. Crimes catalogued as sexual offences have, however, decreased in prevalence by 2,5% on a national level.

Contact crimes reported to the station, on a whole, raise questions over safety and security for women and children in Alexandra.
A trend revealed by the statistics is that reports on contact crimes have decreased since last year at this time. In Alex, reports on contact crimes have dropped by 91 counts from 796 in the previous year’s second quarter, to where statistics currently stand at 704 cases reported.
Regrettably, national statistics paint a morose picture of how murder (and attempted murder) statistics have risen for both women and children. Children are also seen to be experiencing a spike in cases of assault GBH, which has decreased, however, by 0.2% where women are concerned.
The percentage of murders of women rose by 8,6%, and 7,5% for children. Statistics further reveal a national increase of 3,5% in attempted murder cases over women, and an unfathomable 35,7% increase in cases of attempted murder where children are the victims.
The most common places where these contact crimes occur are in public places, and at residences of perpetrators and victims.
