The enduring legacy of Kings Cinema
After decades of the decline of Kings Cinema, William Volmink says he has a vision to revive it to preserve its rich history.
In Alexandra, one of the oldest townships steeped in rich history and diverse culture, there is the iconic Kings Cinema, which has played a pivotal role in entertaining residents and fostering unity before the dawn of democracy.

For decades, this institution, formerly a biskop, has been bringing people together and providing a shared experience that transcended racial boundaries.
William Volmink, the current manager of Kings Cinema says in its heyday, Kings Cinema was the go-to destination for movie lovers, with packed shows and an atmosphere that drew in audiences from all walks of life. To the residents of Alex, it was more than just a place to watch movies, he says it was a hub of social activity, where people gathered to share laughter, tears, and conversation.
During an era marked by apartheid and segregation, Kings Cinema was a symbol of unity and community. He says it hosted people from different backgrounds to enjoy movies and share experiences. “Alexandra was one people, where cultural differences were set aside, and people lived together in harmony,” he recalled.

He notes that they have faced numerous challenges, including the decline of the cinema industry and attempts to erase its history, but they have worked to preserve its legacy because of what it means to their family and the original residents of the old Alexandra before the dawn of democracy.
“There are some people, original residents of Alexandra who would sometimes stand by the door with tears in their eyes, and would tell me about their memories in this place,” he said.
He says he is determined to revive its former glory. With plans to transform the cinema into a gaming hub, Volmink hopes to attract a new generation of gamers, while still honoring the cinema’s rich history.
As Kings Cinema looks to the future, Volmink is optimistic about its potential for reincarnation. With the support of the community and a new generation of entrepreneurs, he believes the cinema can once again become a lively hub of entertainment and culture.
“We will go there, hopefully before my time is up in this world,” Volmink says, “but my children are there, that’s what it’s all about.
