The Freedom Cup, held from May 1–3, is an invitational football tournament that drew together 20 of the top-performing schools from across South Africa.
Despite facing challenging weather conditions that tested all participants, both the St Peter’s U15 and U19 teams displayed admirable performances.
Ritesh Hariram and Kayla Lottering, who lead the St Peter’s football programme, expressed their pride in the U15 team’s achievements. “As a football fraternity, we are proud of our U15 boys for winning the Freedom Cup. U15 Player of the Tournament Wandile Mweli was prolific in front of goal and is commended for his goal-scoring prowess.”
The pride of the college also extended to the U19 first team, which faced intense competition and secured a commendable 18th place out of the 20 participating schools. While their final ranking may not fully represent their potential, the invaluable experience gained from competing against elite-level schools will undoubtedly contribute to their growth as athletes.
“A huge shout-out to our first team boys who represented the college exceptionally well,” Hariram and Lottering added.
Annabel Roberts, the executive head of St Peter’s College, remarked: “It is uplifting and encouraging to start our term on a football high. Our U15s going on tour and winning the Wynberg Boys’ Freedom Cup, against many significant competitors, speaks to St Peter’s College’s high levels of excellence. Well done to the players and coaches. We are hopeful that this bodes well for another term of sporting success at our school.”
