Field band hosts youth talent show in Alexandra
On September 6, Alexandra’s young performers will take the stage at Skeen Primary School, using music and movement to showcase their growth and raise funds for their upcoming national competition.
Alexandra Field Band is set to host a vibrant talent show on September 6 at Skeen Primary School in Alexandra, showcasing the musical and performance skills of its young members while raising funds for their upcoming participation in the National Championships.
According to programme manager Phumzile Thwala, the event is not the first of its kind; the foundation held a similar showcase in 2023, but this year’s edition carries added significance, one that is grounded in demonstrating the youth’s growth since they started. “We need to showcase the talent our youth have and show the community of Alex the impact the Field Band Foundation has had on them,” Thwala said.

Now, the band will take part in the National Championships that are set to take place on October 11. In preparation, the band will attend a five-day camp, and funds raised from the talent show will go toward essentials such as uniforms and meals for the participants. “We are doing this for fundraising purposes. Our members need uniforms for the show and food for the camp that will take place a week before the competition.”

Beyond the music and choreography, Thwala said the Field Band Foundation played a deeper role in the lives of Alexandra’s youth. Thwala said the programme had helped keep young people off the streets and equipped them with life skills through themed lessons on issues such as substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, and personal development. “It has impacted the youth in many ways. We also invite former members who have graduated and moved into other professions to inspire the current group.”
Thwala highlighted that the foundation saw music as more than just an artistic pursuit but a means of personal development. While children learn to play instruments, they also gain essential life skills that help them handle everyday challenges. The September 6 talent show promises to be a celebration of young talent and community spirit, an opportunity for Alexandra to rally behind its youth and support their journey to the national stage.
