Alex G20 mini-summit draft declaration seeks long term change for Alexandra

Community activist and Alex Ambassadors’ Thabo Mopasi says the G20 mini-summit, which is set to take place today in Alexandra, could transform Alexandra into a global hub for sustainable development, community empowerment, and inclusive growth.

Alexandra residents will gather at the Alex-SanKopano Community Centre on November 19 for the Alex G20 mini-summit, held just days before the main G20 Summit in Johannesburg.

They will arrive carrying the hope that a draft declaration, outlining their key recommendations for global leaders, could finally deliver the long-sought change in their community. The declaration focuses on accelerating local economic growth through sustainable development in Alexandra.

According to community activist and Alex Ambassadors’ Thabo Mopasi, the declaration is expected to improve livelihoods, increase community engagement, and put Alexandra on the global map. “The draft declaration is expected to improve livelihoods through sustainable economic growth and community empowerment. It ensures that local communities are directly involved in decision making processes and development initiatives.”

Mopasi emphasised that the mini-summit’s focus on inclusive development, sustainable growth, and community empowerment aligns with the United Nations’ sustainable development goals (SDGs), which promote prosperity, peace, and partnership. “By prioritising community engagement and participation, the mini-summit can ensure that development initiatives respond to local needs and priorities, and that communities are empowered to take ownership of their development agendas.”

He added that the mini-summit will also serve as a crucial platform for residents to discuss the role of political parties in engaging with their constituents and informing them about the benefits of international platforms, like the G20.

Numerous establishments are set to participate in the mini-summit, including travel and tourism services, fashion and design outlets, heritage arts and culture institutions, modelling agencies and eateries, and restaurants, among others.

Notably, young people have also shown interest in making their voices heard, and contributing to the draft declaration. “Our youth have already raised issues around LGBTQIA+ rights, economic opportunities, and community exclusion. The declaration ensures their voices are heard and acted upon.”

Mopasi believes the mini-summit’s approach could serve as a blueprint for other communities, providing a model for inclusive and sustainable development. “By leveraging digital platforms and promoting global co-operation, we can make sure development is inclusive, sustainable, and community driven.”
