Contentious draw leaves Black Poison and Mighty Heroes unsatisfied

Controversial referee decisions, missed chances, and a tight battle for derby glory will see Black Poison’s Sunday clash with Mighty Heroes linger in the minds of supporters for a while.

When the referee blew the final whistle during the Alex derby at the Alex Safe Hub on Sunday, both Alex Black Poison and Mighty Heroes FC left the field scowling.

The defeat on their faces clearly showed that they went into the match with no intentions of sharing the spoils in a 1–1 draw. This was no ordinary stalemate. It was a contest marked by disputed referee decisions, wasted opportunities, and a bruising battle for maximum points in the Hollywoodbets Regional League fixture.

From the onset, Mighty Heroes’ objective was clearly to attack relentlessly and draw first blood. Their aggressive approach paid off 12 minutes into the game, when Black Poison conceded a penalty, and Tshegofatso Tleane converted it, giving Heroes a 1–0 lead.
The goal rattled Black Poison and frustrated coach Eric Paul, who paced the touchline with impatience as his side struggled to find a breakthrough. His restless movements told the story of a coach unwilling to surrender the derby without a fight.

The first half was difficult to watch. Despite holding the advantage, Mighty Heroes’ fans grew restless as their team also struggled to extend the lead. Coach Reggie Moloyi was also agitated, pointing fingers at the referee and linemen’s decisions, which he believed robbed his side of a chance to win the game.

As the minutes ticked by, Mighty Heroes’ attacking intensity began to fade. “We told them to just stay back because of the decisions that were against us,” Moloyi explained. “The linesman was just letting them down. We just said, ‘Don’t go, just manage it until halftime’.”

Meanwhile, Black Poison, sensing the shift, pushed forward, yet, despite creating chances, they failed to find the net. Their persistent efforts, however, finally paid off in the second half, when they were awarded a highly contested penalty after what many spectators insisted was an out-of-the-box foul. Goalkeeper Wandile Dhlamini stepped up and scored it, levelling the score at 1–1.

“I still believe the foul happened inside [the penalty area],” Paul explained. “I remember very well, it happened inside. If somebody disputes it, it is unfortunate we don’t have a video where we can see.”

The penalty was the final goal of the match that saw both sides walking away with a point, but neither with satisfaction.

The missed chances and the lingering sense of injustice will certainly ensure that the Sunday clash is remembered, not only for its scoreline, but for the drama that played out on the pitch.
