Alex father hopes for finality in son’s murder case

I hope September 5 will be the last time the family has to come to court again on this matter, says Sipho Masebe.

The father of murdered Sandton View High School boy Thando Khumalo, Sipho Masebe, will make the journey once again from Tsutsumani to the Alexandra Regional Court as he has done for the past three years, hoping for finality in the murder case.

Masebe, an accomplished Alex actor and businessman, who has endured seven sentencing postponements alone in this case, said he’s keeping his fingers crossed that today, September 5, will be the D-Day that murderer Peter Mphulo Magolego will hear his fate.

Thando (20) was Masebe’s adopted son as instructed by Masebe’s late sister just before she passed on. He was fatally shot at close range after a chase by Magolego following a road rage incident on August 28, 2022. The Grade 11 learner was returning to his home in Tsutsumani Village in the early morning hours, after a night out with six of his friends, when he met his tragic death on the corner of 12th Avenue and Hofmeyr Street.

Magolego was convicted of the murder after he pleaded guilty in April, two years after his arrest. A few days after the incident, and said he was remorseful for what happened and did not want to waste the court’s time any further.

Since then, Thando’s family has endured seven sentencing postponements in the case and Masebe said they were yearning for the completion of the case so they could move on towards healing from the traumatic incident.

The sentencing part has been hamstrung by Magolego’s social worker who failed to hand in a report to the court following an order from the presiding magistrate. The other report, from a social worker for the Khumalo family, was lodged timeously.
Masebe said he was hoping this time around there will be no delays and that this will be the final day they come to court on this matter.
