Safa suspends all amateur football activities
ALEXANDRA -– The football governing body Safa has suspended all amateur football activities in the country.
Amateur football has taken yet another Covid-19 knock as the coronavirus tightens its vice grip on the country in what has been described as a second wave of a different variant
of the disease.
This follows a decision by the South African Football Association to immediately suspend all amateur football activity in the country in the face of the spiralling infections of a second wave of Covid-19.
“In the light of rising numbers of Covid-19 in the country, we hereby advise our members that all non-professional football activities inclusive of training sessions, courses, workshops and matches are hereby suspended till further notice, by which time the association will make further assessment and advice,” said a statement issued by Safa CEO Advocate Tebogo Motlanthe on 8 January.
Motlanthe said this extraordinary step is taken in the interest of the safety of players, technical staff, administrators, match officials, the media and all other personnel involved in the organisation and staging of matches and all other football events.
He said professional football will continue under the measures being implemented by its special member, the National Soccer League in compliance with the required government protocols and directives.
