Road running set to return to Alexandra in 2024

Competitive road running is set to return to the country's oldest township of Alexandra through the Adreach Alex 10K on March 21 next year.

After nearly a decade of no formal road races in Alexandra, Run Alex Athletics Club launched the Adreach Alex 10K that will take place on March 21 next year and will also explore the great and historic sites in the township such as Mandela House.

The event has been given the blessing of the controlling body in the province, the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) and will be run on Human Rights Day on March 21. The club which was only formally registered with the CGA in 2020 two years after its formation, after operating as a training group for several years, took a bold step and organised the first fun run last year.

The success of the fun run inspired the CGA to grant the club much-deserved rights to officially host a formal 10km race in the historic township and the #ADREACHALEX10K has since been penciled into the CGA calendar as a day where runners will pound the streets of Alex.

Having always thrown their weight behind projects that bring positive change to Alexandra, the Adreach Group has firmly stood behind the race and penciled in a three-year partnership in the form of a platinum sponsor with Run Alex to work with the community to ensure the success of the event.

“We are thrilled with this partnership which we hope will serve to revive road running in the iconic township and rejuvenate the status of Alexandra as a breeding ground for champions of various sporting codes,” chairperson of Run Alex Athletics Club Lebogang Mogotlane told Alex News in an interview.

“The upliftment of the community of Alexandra has always been at the heart of our operations. We are excited to have made our contribution with the fun run that resulted in this 10K road race, and we are even more thrilled to guide the growth of this race for the next three years and ensure that the community gets the full benefit of this event,” said the business development director of the Adreach Group, Zuza Mbatha.

Run Alex has also partnered with the Alex Plaza Shopping Centre whose centre manager Lebogang Legwale said the race will start and finish at the centre, which has enough parking space for everyone and shops to cater to the food and drink requirements of those participating in the race as well as shop for other items they may need.
