Herdbuoys through to AMSL Top 8 final

Alex Masters Soccer League (AMSL) outfit Herdbuoys FC has booked its spot in the final of the Top 8 competition for the 2024 season.

Alexandra Masters Soccer League’s Herdbuoys FC has secured its spot in the final of the league’s top competition after beating Benfica 5–4 on penalties at the Victoria Grounds in Lombardy East on March 3.

The two sides were tied 3–3 at the end of 60 minutes of play for the retirees of professional and amateur football in the township and the team that advances had to be decided on the lottery of penalties.

Herdbuoys are yet to learn who their opponents will be in the final that is scheduled for March 10, at the same grounds. In the other semi-final, Asazi Bafana FC and Chivas FC were tied 1–1 before the game was abandoned following a controversial penalty that was awarded to Chivas which allowed the outfit to level the score 1–1 and all chaos broke loose and the match had to be abandoned.

According to the AMSL chairperson of the AMSL Competitions Committee Percy Ndaba, the outcome of the Benfica-Chivas semi-final match has been referred to the AMSL Disciplinary Committee for adjudication, which Ndaba said, should be resolved before the final on Sunday [March 10].

On the day of the final, there will be several friendlies played as an appetiser ahead of the Top 8 final, including an exhibition match between retirees over 50 years to entertain the crowds that are expected to watch the final.

Proceedings leading up to the final will begin as early as 08:30 and the final anytime after 13:00, with food stalls and refreshments on sale for the football-loving spectators on the day.
