Suspects arrested for armed robbery, possession of firearm

Jeppe SAPS arrested four suspects in separate incidents of armed robbery, common robbery and the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition this week week.

Warrant Officer Richard Munyai, Jeppe SAPS communications officer said a man was at the corner of Marshall and Betty streets in Jeppestown on July 20 when he was approached by two men. They were armed with a knife and a broken bottle.

“The men searched him and took his wallet, cash, sunglasses and cellular phone and fled. The man opened a case and one man (26) was arrested,” said W/O Munyai.

On the same day a man (30) was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Police officers patrolling City Deep stopped and searched the man. They found a firearm in his possession but he did not produce a licence. He was arrested and detained at Jeppe SAPS. The firearm was reported stolen in Tembisa in 2002.

On July 21 a woman was approached by a group of men in Main Street, Jeppestown.

“She crossed the road and walked to the other side. The men crossed the road as well and one of them asked for her cellular phone number. She told him she does not have a cellular phone. One of the men searched her and found a cellular phone. He asked her why she had lied to him. He took the phone. His friend told him to leave her alone and give her cellular phone back but he refused. The woman saw a police van passing by and stopped it to report the matter. The man (22) was arrested,” said W/O Munyai.

On the same day, a man was arrested in Doornfontein for robbing a man known to him.

“It is alleged that the suspect pointed a knife at the complainant and demanded money. He took his wallet, cash and cellular phone. The complainant reported the incident to the police and the man was arrested,” said W/O Munyai.
