Man arrested for stabbing bar patron

A man has been hospitalised after being stabbed during a fight at a bar in Stoneridge.

A 22-year-old man was arrested for the stabbing and detained at the Edenvale Police Station.

Acting spokesperson for the Edenvale SAPS, Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts, said the incident took place on Tuesday evening last week.

“The details of the incident are unclear and will form part of a police investigation. At this stage, all we can confirm is that the man was stabbed with a sharp object. He was taken to hospital in a serious condition and was placed in ICU,” he said.

The suspect was denied bail when he appeared in the Edenvale Magistrate’s Court and his case was postponed until August 8 in order for him to receive legal representation.

“This is a serious matter. A person is in hospital and the young man could face charges of attempted murder if the court sees it fit,” said Lt Col Roberts.

He urged residents to drink responsibly.

“We are seeing an increasing number of assaults in Edenvale. If you feel you have to go to a bar and you have to drink, do it responsibly and take those around you into consideration,” Lt Col Roberts said.
