Youth Desk holds Women’s Month celebrations

The Yeoville Youth Desk held its Women’s Month celebrations on August 16 at the Yeoville Library.

The event, hosted by the Yeoville Community Police Forum, was attended by the youth in the area.

School children were allowed to attend in order to be able to interact with the various speakers on the day. Constable Thabo Malatji, of the Yeoville SAPS, spoke to the young people and women in attendance.

He urged the community to report cases of abuse.

“Police are bound by the law to protect the community. Take a stand because the perpetrators are among us,” said Constable Malatji.

He also warned young people about engaging in sexual activity at an early age and emphasized the importance of using protection when engaging in sexual activity.

A woman, who was in the audience, asked whether a person who has been raped can get counselling without having a case number.

Constable Malatji responded with an emphatic ‘yes’, pointing out that the various trauma centres at police stations do not discriminate. Other speakers included Mr Sibonelo Zwane, a health advisor from Usizo Lanamuhla health group.

He spoke about the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle. He encouraged people to exercise any way they can.

“Instead of taking the lift, take the stairs and take walks as often as you can,” said Mr Zwane. Another speaker was Mrs Pi Mohlala Mabeng, chairperson of the Sector 1 Community Police Forum. She spoke at length about the importance of Woman’s Month and the way in which society treats women.
