Detective arrested for Bedfordview kidnapping
This comes after hip-hop artist Khuli Chana was shot and wounded by undercover police officers, who mistook the musician for one of the kidnappers.
A Silverton police detective was arrested on Monday for the kidnapping and extortion of a Bedfordview resident.
The Pretoria officer is set to appear at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court within the next 48 hours.
This comes after hip-hop artist Khuli Chana was shot and wounded by undercover police officers, who mistook the musician for one of the kidnappers.
According to the Bedfordview SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabati, the kidnapping victim was at his home in Talisman Road, Bedfordview, when four armed men entered his home.
The men were wearing black reflector vests and claimed to be police officers. After proceeding to steal what valuables they could find, the men then fled the scene with the homeowner as a hostage
“The suspects called later that night, stating they wanted a R100 000 ransom for the Bedfordview resident,” said Sgt Nhlabati.
“The kidnappers left the victim in Atteridgeville, Pretoria, where he was found on Monday,” he said.
A manhunt was launched to try find the victim, which led to the police mistakenly identifying Mr Chana as one of the perpetrators – at a petrol station in Midrand. Cash was supposed to have been handed over to the kidnappers at the petrol station in exchange for the victim early on Monday morning.
Mr Chana is recovering at home and has opened a case of attempted murder against the officers after the joint Hawks and SAPS operation to rescue the kidnapped resident led to his being shot.
