Discounts for toll road users

The threshold for class A1 vehicles is R250, while a class A2 vehicle will reach its threshold at R450. In addition, a 15 percent discount will apply to class A2 vehicles for toll fees between R400 and R450.

To alleviate the pressure on motorists, the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) instituted various discounts for motorists making use of Gauteng toll roads.

While discounts apply for regular users on the e-toll route, the total of all discounts may not exceed the amount of toll payable.

There are three types of discounts which will apply, but only if the payment for each toll transaction is made within the grace period of seven days.

Discounts which can be applied are a time of day discount, a frequent user discount and a grace period discount for alternate users.

Time of day and frequent user discounts are calculated using the standard tariff.

All discounts apply to a specific vehicle and not an e-toll account.

Only two types of discounts will apply after the grace period of seven days has expired; these are discounts for alternate users and a once-off discount for alternate users.

These will apply if an alternate road user makes use of the e-toll route for the first time and fails to pay within the seven day grace period, but who registers with Sanral as an e-tag user or VLN user.

Time of day discounts apply to all e-toll road users who make used of tolled roads at certain times of the day.

Alternate e-toll users, or those who have not registered for e-toll, also qualify but only if payment was made within the seven day grace period.

Vehicles classed as A1 and A2

A 25 percent discount on the standard tariff rate will apply between midnight and 5am, as well as 11pm and midnight on week days.

From 5am to 6am and 6pm to 11pm on weekday’s, e-toll road users qualify for a 10 percent discount.

There will be no discount for e-toll users passing gantries between 6am and 10am, as well as 2pm and 6pm on week days.

Only a 5 percent discount will apply to e-toll road users between 10am and 2pm.

Over weekends, motorists using the Gauteng e-toll route between midnight and 6am, and 6pm and midnight, will pay 25 percent less while a 15 percent discount will apply between 6am and 6pm.

On public holiday’s, all e-toll road users will receive a 25 percent discount.

Vehicles classed and B and C

A 30 percent discount on the standard tariff rate will apply between midnight and 5am as well as 11pm and midnight on week days.

From 5am to 6am and 7pm to 11pm on weekday’s e-toll road users qualify for a 25 percent discount.

There will be no discount for e-toll users passing gantries between 6am and 8.30am as well as 4pm and 7pm on week days.

A 20 percent discount will apply to e-toll road users between 8.30am and 4pm.

Over weekends, motorists using the Gauteng e-toll route between midnight and 6am and 6pm and midnight will pay 30 percent less while a 25 percent discount will apply between 6am and 6pm.

On public holiday’s all e-toll road users will receive a 30 percent discount.

The frequent user discounts on the standard tariff applies only to registered e-tag road users.

This type of discount is based on how often a registered e-tag user uses tolled roads.

Frequent user discounts apply for each registered vehicle separately and not the cumulative use of all vehicles, registered in a single road user’s name.

The discount applies only when the threshold value has been reached and only for the remainder of that calendar month.

Once the threshold value has been reached, the road user will incur no further liability for e-toll transactions with that particular motor vehicle and a 100 percent discount will apply for the remainder of that calendar month.

The threshold for class A1 vehicles is R250, while a class A2 vehicle will reach its threshold at R450. In addition, a 15 percent discount will apply to class A2 vehicles for toll fees between R400 and R450.

Class B vehicles have a R1 750 threshold, while the threshold for class C vehicles is R3 500.

Time of day and frequent user discounts will not apply to alternate users who pay for an e-toll transaction after the seven day grace period.

Alternate users who do not pay within the seven day grace period will still receive a 60 percent discount if payment is made within 30 days of the date of the invoice.

Alternatively, a 30 percent discount will apply if payment is made within 60 days.
