Pool refurbishment continues
At the time, a City of Johannesburg (CoJ) official said the pool was closed because of major structural problems.
The refurbishment of the Rhodes Park swimming pool is expected to be complete soon.
A contractor was appointed to upgrade the facility and fix the pool late last year.
Although work stopped during the festive season, contractors started early this year to complete the job.
Workers are currently upgrading the buildings and fixing the shell of the pool.
The pool was closed several years ago due to structural damage to the shell. According to council, the damage was the result of soil movement. During this closure, the ageing buildings surrounding the pool suffered further at the hands of vandals.
Several residents urged council to repair the pool and open it to the public over the years. Their pleas were never answered.
Some repairs took place in 2006. Although it opened the following year, this was short lived.
At the time, a City of Johannesburg (CoJ) official said the pool was closed because of major structural problems.
Last year Clr Carlos da Rocha, of ward 66, said he requested officials help him address problems in certain facilities which included Rhodes Park.
An on-site meeting was held with officials and soon thereafter, money was allocated by council to repair the pool.
Mr Nthatisi Modingoane, from the CoJ, said the repairs were estimated at R7-million.
It is anticipated that the pool will open to the public this year.
