Dangerous area fenced

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) is constructing a fence along Second Street where the Jukskei River runs beneath the road.

Years of pleas for fencing along Second Street, in Bez Valley, have been answered.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) is constructing a fence along Second Street where the Jukskei River runs beneath the road.

Ms Stacey Haahjem, a resident, said she is relieved.

She constantly implored authorities to construct a fence along the road in fear of someone falling into the river.

Clr Carlos da Rocha, of ward 66, said he requested the fencing last year.

“I am glad the JRA realised the seriousness of the lack of fencing. I am glad the work has begun and that instead of a wire fence, a concrete one is being constructed,” said Clr Da Rocha.

Ms Haahjem said she hopes the work will be completed soon and that access to the sluice will be blocked off entirely to prevent children and thieves accessing the river.

Sergeant Desmond de Mackett, from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), did state at a public meeting recently that criminals could be using the tunnel below as a hide out.

Ms Haahjem said, “I hope the JRA fences the other side of the road too, as the fence has been vandalised and is in the process of falling down. But on the whole, it is amazing to see some action.”
