The newly-launched Edenvale Riverwatch’s first clean up took place on Saturday, March 29.
Community members gathered to clean up the rivers in the Edenvale area.
The river clean ups centred on World Water Day and involved the Illiondale Wetland Buddies, Birchwood, the Edenvale Ridge Resident’s Association (ERRA), the Hurlyvale East Buurendal Resident’s Association (HEBRA), the Friends of Horwood’s Farm, the Avenues Group and community volunteers. Pupils from Edenglen High School also assisted with the clean up.
The project is dedicated to the improvement and restoration of streams and rivers with the hope that authorities, volunteers and civil society can be connected to work towards the common goal of rehabilitating the rivers in the Edenvale area.
The objective of the project includes the preservation of the river habitats as continuous corridors for biodiversity and wildlife. The project also seeks to improve the quality of water and health of the streams. There will also be regular walks and leisure opportunities along the rivers to promote community understanding and involvement. Other actions include preventing pollution, stopping the advancing of invasive plants and examining planned developments.
According to Mr Irwin Juckes, founder of Edenvale Riverwatch, “Our purpose is to clean up the rivers and to remove buckweed, with the long term aim of keeping the rivers preserved and improving the general state of the rivers.”
