Kensington residents clean Queen Street
Kensington residents recently took to the streets to create a cleaner environment.
A group of enthusiastic residents participated in a clean-up of Queen Street, organised by the I Love Kensington Association (Ilka) on May 31.
Residents cleaned between Langermann Drive and Cumberland Road. Plastic bags were donated by Pikitup and rubber gloves were supplied by local business C1st Light EMS.
“For a while there has been concern about the growing problem of litter and grime in our suburb and in particular in this main thoroughfare and the central business district of the suburb. Queen Street is known in Johannesburg as an attractive area which is home to antique and cottage furniture shops, small businesses and authentic coffee shops and restaurants. These businesses are growing and are well-supported by the community. They bring people into our suburb,” said Ms Sue Muller from Ilka.
She said in addition to the vehicles passing through the area, there are pedestrians for whom Queen Street is a thoroughfare to work and school.
“Unfortunately, not all those who run these businesses are careful about keeping the paving and parking areas outside their properties clean and litter free. Several pedestrians add to the street litter,” she said.
Ms Muller urged residents and business owners to maintain their own properties as best they can and to call on the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) to fulfil its obligations.
She urged people who have concerns or complaints to submit them to the council and obtain reference numbers. E-mail infrastructure@kensington.org.za if you do not receive a satisfactory response within a reasonable time.
Those interested in supporting Ilka’s clean-up operations, held on the last Saturday of each month, can visit the Ilka Facebook page for more information.
