Suspect gets eight-year prison sentence

"He also had a firearm license that belonged someone else."

The Johannesburg High Court sentenced Sizwe Shabalala to eight years in prison for possession of unlicensed firearm.

According to the Jeppe SAPS communications officer, Warrant Officer Richard Monyayi, Shabalala was walking with a friend along Commissioner Street in Jeppestown on February 8, 2014, when he was arrested.

“Police officers who were patrolling stopped and searched the men. They found an Arcus 98 DA pistol with nine live rounds in Shabalala’s possession. He also had a firearm license that belonged someone else. He could not explain why he had either in his possession,” said W/O Monyayi.

Shabalala was sentenced to seven years for possession of an unlicensed firearm and one year for the possession ammunition.

“Both sentences will run concurrently,” said W/O Munyayi.
