Unroadworthy taxis impounded

Hefty fines were imposed on the owners of these vehicles for endangering the lives of their passengers.

Twelve unroadworthy taxis were impounded during a Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) operation on March 21 in Malvern.

The JMPD spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, said the vehicles were in a dangerous condition.

“There was no way they could carry passengers. The wheels were in a poor condition, the lights were not working, the seats were broken and in some cases, the doors were not closing properly,” he said.

He said hefty fines were imposed on the owners of these vehicles for endangering the lives of their passengers.

“The owners thought because these vehicles could drive, they were in a good condition. We are not going to allow such behaviour on our roads where our fellow citizens’ lives are endangered by ignorance,” said Chief Supt Minnaar.

The operation formed part of the JMPD’s Easter operations.
