
The City of Ekurhuleni is set to present a commemoration for the late struggle stalwart, Mr OR Tambo, who would have celebrated his 99th birthday on October 27.
Ekurhuleni has dubbed October as O R Tambo Month to keep his legacy alive.
Ekurhuleni spokesperson, Mr Themba Gadebe, said the month-long commemorative programme under the theme ‘Celebrating the life, times and legacy of O.R Tambo, 99 years and counting towards the centenary’ will begin on October 15, with the symphonic sounds of the Choral Male Choir Extravaganza filling the H.H Ngakane Community Hall in Kwa-Thema.
“The Choral Male Choir Extravaganza will be followed by a soulful choral music competition, which will see an array of choirs from across the metro exhibiting their talent at the Thokoza Auditorium on October 22. Mr Tambo was known for his flair as a music composer, song arranger, skillful producer and choir director,”said Mr Gadebe.
On October 21 to 24, the city will host school debates and workshops at the OR Tambo Cultural Precinct in Watville. The debates will ensure that the Tambos’ ideals are imparted to younger generations.
On October 27, President Jacob Zuma will lead a wreath laying ceremony to pay his respects at the graveside of Adelaide and O.R. Tambo at the Tamboville Cemetery in Wattville. The Tambo’s Cemetery is a National Heritage Site.
“An opera theatrical production depicting the life of Mr Tambo will be showcased at the Springs Theatre on October 28, to promote classical music as an art form that was so dear to the struggle icon. Furthermore, the city will host the OR Tambo Youth Games at the Wattville Stadium on October 29,” he said.
The day’s activities will include soccer, aerobics and the 6km fun walk around the Tambo Memorial.
The OR Tambo programme will be closed on October 30 with a jazz session at the OR Tambo Cultural Precinct, which is to be headlined by various Jazz artists.
