Donation for St Giles

DEWETSHOF – St Giles gets much-needed funds.

St Giles home for the physically disabled is honoured to have been the recipient of a donation of over R40 000 from the Bedford Charity Walk, organised by the marketing manager for Bedford Centre, Nikki Savides Kruger.

The residents at St Giles described her as a caring person. “She is a very caring, community-minded young lady who, with an energetic team of event planners [DB Events], put the whole walk together,” said the home’s Dianne Hasapis.

Last year the old-age home received R26 000, and they were absolutely delighted that this year they received almost double that. “We are grateful to the community near and far who registered to do this walk and who came with the spirit of giving, of joy and a great deal of energy,” said Hasapis.

St Giles was presented with the huge cardboard cheque just before the gun went off. Hasapis quipped, “I walked with the cheque the whole way. I wasn’t even going to put it down.

“I’m glad I did as many folk along the way posed with the cheque and many cheered and said a good word. Many asked why we don’t do this sort of thing twice a year.”

Egoli Golden City Toastmasters chairperson, Sherryl Mulligan and her crowd of excited fellow toastmasters and their families gave out ice-cold water sachets halfway along the route. The toastmaster group uses a hall at St Giles for their meetings and are great friends of St Giles. “Many of our residents are coaxed… to express themselves at Egoli Golden City Toastmasters,” said Hasapis.

St Giles home is at a critical stage in its 60-year existence. “This makes us especially grateful to Nikki and her team at Bedford Centre for this huge gesture. I suppose they could just give us the money without all the sweat involved in putting this charity walk together. Not only did we receive the money but this created huge awareness of our home,” said Hasapis.

“A couple of our residents handed out the medals and this was exciting for them and for the walkers.”
