WATCH: Jeppe High School for Girls knitting their way to warmth

KENSINGTON – Jeppe girls knitting for a good cause.

Jeppe High School for Girls has done it again this year by hitting its target for this year’s project, 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela.

Three years in a row Jeppe girls has been supporting the 67 Blankets project, which is an initiative by Jeppe High School for Girls’ former pupil, Carolyn Steyn following a challenge from Ms Zelda La Grange.

Carolyn Steyn with Jeppe girls celebrate their achievement of reaching the target.

The project has now grown to a worldwide group of knitters, who make blankets by hand for those in need. “We started with Jeppe girls two years back and it was a competition run by Saporotex International for schools and Jeppe girls won two years in a row. I’m proud to see the girls continuing with the project even though now it’s no longer a competition,” said Steyn.

The school’s target this year is 600 hundred blankets, which they will donate to the needy. Jeppe High School for Girls’ headmistress, Dina Goncalves said, “I’m proud of the girls. They have shown commitment to the project and that has resulted in achieving our target and bringing the school, families and community together.”

Steyn said this project is about knitting in the name of Nelson Mandela. “We knit broken live together and stitch communities together through this project,” she said.

The girls shared the feeling of joy in reaching their target because that means more needy people will receive warmth. They said it is a wonderful feeling giving someone a blanket and receiving a smile. “I would like to thank the school for supporting the project. Jeppe girls support each other and that’s what Jeppe High School for Girls is all about,” said Steyn, who encouraged other schools to join and support the project if they are interested. At the time of going to print, 595 blankets had been completed.
