Observatory resident and Ward 66 committee member, Joseph Dube, is ready to serve the community and influence change in the ward.
Dube is the committee member for infrastructure and services.
“As a community, we need to work together to make our ward better,” said Dube.
Ward committee members were elected at the beginning of 2017, six months after the August 3 local government elections.
The purpose of ward committees is to encourage participation by the community.
The committee’s responsibility is to make the municipality aware of the needs and concerns of residents and to keep people informed about the activities of the municipality.
Dube said the committee aims to make the community aware that members are there to support and assist where possible.
“We are an extension of our ward councillor. We are here to support the ward councillor,” said Dube.
He said Ward 66 is a large ward and to address the issues, the community needs to communicate with them as a committee.
“I would like to establish contacts street by street. That way we will have a resident in each street who can communicate with us. In doing so we will create a working relationship with those residents.”
Some of the concerns Dube hopes to resolve include illegal dumping and safety and security.
“In order for safety to improve, we need residents to report all streets lights that are not working. When it is dark, it hinders our visibility to determine what is happening in the streets. We cannot even identify those dumping rubbish on our street corners at night,” said Dube.
He said if community members have issues related to infrastructure and service in Ward 66 they can contact him.
“We are here to serve the community and people deserve good service,” said Dube.

The EXPRESS will introduce the various members of ward committees in weeks to come.
