Ward 118 Clr Neuren Pietersen, MMC for Public Safety Clr Michael Sun and residents took the opportunity to clean up Derrick Avenue in Cyrildene on March 17.
It’s been seven months since the launch of the A Re Sebetseng clean-up campaign and it has been gaining momentum in the community.

Malvern resident Thembi Sithole, who was also cleaning Derrick Avenue, said it is the responsibility of the residents to keep their areas clean.
“We need to clean every week. We don’t have to wait for A Re Sebetseng campaign activities to keep our areas clean,” she said.

Pietersen said he is pleased with the turnout of the residents.
“I am very happy with the turnout of residents, even in this cold weather residents supported the campaign. I must acknowledge the consistent efforts of Tzuchi, a non-profit group, that volunteers to clean Derrick Avenue three times a week. Tzuchi does not request payments to clean Derrick Avenue but any contributions are welcome.

“I am very happy to see the markedly cleaned Derrick Avenue. We will be working on improving the precinct and promoting adherence to the by-laws of the city with the help of extra JMPD operations,” he said.
Philemon Mkhari from Pikitup said he is very happy to see residents keeping the area clean.

“Usually, it is our responsibility to clean the streets and ensure that all areas are clean. I am pleased to see that residents are also helping us clean our suburbs. They are not just waiting for the Pikitup truck to clean up,” he said.
