Bedfordview High School was used as a voting registration venue on January 26 and 27 when the school was subject to scrutiny over the state of its premises.
Bedfordview resident Marion Kate was at the school to register to vote on January 27 as the school was zoned for her area.
“After I registered, I took a walk around the school and noticed the old prefab classrooms not being used and they were filled with old chairs.”

Kate added that the school grounds were neglected and seemed unusable.
“It made me question where the children are going during break time and during class time if these premises are in such a state,” said Kate.
Principal of Bedfordview High School Tshisudi Mpho said the photos shared on social media are of the abandoned classrooms that the Department of Education approved for demolition.

“The classrooms have been affected by asbestos and cannot be used. A contractor has been busy with the site,” said Mpho.
The classrooms are also being used to store chairs that cannot be repaired until they are removed.
Mpho said the lawnmower had recently been fixed and maintenance was being done.

“We do maintenance throughout the year. The contractors are hired by the school and the Department of Education,” said Mpho.
He said if residents are concerned about the state of the school, they are more than welcome to visit the school and discuss the matter with him.
A request for comment was sent to the Department of Education on January 30 at about 1pm.

Comment was requested by January 31 at 4pm.
At the time of going to print no comment had been received.
