Mandela remembered through music concert for grandparents at St James on Mandela Day.
Appreciating the crucial role their grandparents play in their lives with a mini music concert was the way to go for the learners of St James Preparatory School on Mandela Day.

The school’s chairperson of the board of governors, William Wooldridge, echoed this message and its importance in the context of the day on July 18.
“Every year at the school we celebrate Mandela Week, but chose to use this day in particular to honour the grandparents of the school by having the learners put this concert together for them,” said Wooldridge.
He referenced Mandela’s vision for education to be used as a tool for building a better and more inclusive society.
“We aim to provide our children with the finest education possible. The purpose ultimately is for us to groom and develop the next breed of young leaders to take the country forward,” added Wooldridge.
Grandparent Dilip Bhowan praised the initiative taken by the school.
“What more can one say? It is the first time that I was treated to such. And for that to have been done in this way on a day like this was really great on the part of the teachers and learners,” he said.
Learners had a lot to say about the late great statesmen and acknowledged their grandparents for the wonderful roles they play in their lives.
“The day is special because it’s Mandela’s birthday and he was obviously a grandparent. So to have our grandparents here to witness what we learn and how we sing was also very special,” said Grade Seven learner Kriya Jasmath.
Schoolmate Mishka Perumal said: “I think the songs we sang fit well with Mandela’s birthday, and I also really enjoyed seeing all the grandparents smiling back at us for what we did for them.”
Amy Muller, also in Grade Seven, added: “What I think was particularly special about Mandela is that he never gave up in fighting for freedom. And he did it in a peaceful way, which was admirable.”
