Malvern woman gets four years for shoplifting

Serial shoplifting Malvern woman gets harsh prison sentence.

A Malvern woman was sentenced to four years in prison after she was found guilty of shoplifting by the Joburg Regional Court.

Cleveland SAPS spokesperson Capt Johan Jordan described the woman, 41-year-old Nontombi Sikhenjana, as a serial offender who had a criminal record dating back to 2002.

“It was at this time that she was convicted to pay a fine of R500 for an offence she committed while staying in Rustenburg,” said Jordaan.

“Following this, she was caught on the wrong side of the law on numerous other occasions, in different parts of the country. She was arrested on November 7, 2017, by security guards at the Shoprite Checkers in Malvern. She had been caught stealing goods to the value of R1 616 off the shelves.”

Jordaan commended the sentence handed down to Sikhenjana.

He said he hopes it will serve as a strong deterrent to other offenders.

“The woman is a habitual criminal and that is the reason for the harsh sentence handed to her. On each previous occasion whereupon she was released from prison, after serving time on a successful conviction, Sikhenjana reverted back to her old ways.

“Cleveland SAPS management commends the investigating officer in the case, Const Mpho Mashekane, for the good work she carried out,” concluded Jordaan.
