A man found guilty on charges of rape, aggravated robbery, kidnapping and pointing of a firearm was handed two life sentences and an additional 70 years by the South Gauteng High Court on August 6.
Alfred Morutlwa, 25, is due to serve the sentences concurrently.
“He abducted unsuspecting female victims at gunpoint and took them to isolated areas where he raped them and then robbed them of valuables and cash,” Cleveland SAPS spokesperson Capt Johan Jordaan said.
He was arrested on July 13 last year at the Mangolongolo Informal Settlement in Denver after police received information on his whereabouts.
He was transported to and detained at Northam SAPS, where two rape and robbery cases had been opened against him.
Jordaan said, “Morutlwa had several more cases investigated against him at other police stations.”
“He was also wanted for two cases of rape and armed robbery by Cleveland SAPS, two cases of rape at Jeppe SAPS, and a rape and robbery case at Hillbrow SAPS.
“The cases were centralised after court appearances in Northam and at the Joburg Magistrate’s Court. They were eventually placed on the roll of the High Court, leading up to Morutlwa’s conviction and sentencing,” said Jordaan.
“The management of Cleveland SAPS welcome this conviction.”
