Marketing and communications manager at the security company Mulligay Pillay said response officer Mbuyiseni Zwane was shot and killed when robbers travelling in four get-away vehicles, held-up staff and took cash, cellphones and electrical equipment during a business robbery.
“Zwane responded to a silent panic activation and at about 11.45am stopped his vehicle a safe distance away from the entrance and approached the premises on foot.
“He entered the shopping centre and approached the business when shots were fired. Zwane was wounded and attempted to get to safety,” said Pillay.
“CCTV footage showed that two suspects sustained gunshot wounds when Zwane returned fire. They were assisted by their accomplices to escape,” Pillay told the EXPRESS.
Cleveland SAPS spokesperson Capt Johan Jordaan said the suspects used a VW Caddy Panel van, VW Polo, Chevrolet Cruise and a Toyota Corolla as their get-away cars.
He said police have since launched a manhunt for the suspects.
He urged community members with information to come forward.
“Cleveland SAPS condemns this violent incident and will do everything in its power to apprehend the suspects,” said Jordaan.
Park Meadows Shopping Centre stated, “The centre management is saddened by this tragic loss of life and pass on our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.”
