SAPS to maintain visibility as Easter holidays approach

“Vehicle checkpoints, as well as stop and searches on major routes and around srapyards and liquor outlets will remain in place.”

Multidisciplinary and integrated operations will continue throughout Edenvale as police continue to try to intercept, dislodge and apprehend criminals involved in various crimes.

According to Edenvale SAPS communications officer, Warrant Officer Jacob Mashile, the roll-out of operations has seen heightened foot and vehicle patrols identify criminal hotspots.

These include shopping malls, provincial as well as national roads and public spaces.

Mashile said patrols are being conducted in these areas to reduce and minimise incidents of crime.

On February 5 more than 700 vehicles where searched at vehicle checkpoints. Seen here is one of the VCP’s on Horwood’s Street.

“Thorough patrols are being conducted and will be intensified as people have stated returning to their place of work and learners have returned to school.”

On February 5, more than 700 vehicles were searched at vehicle checkpoints by SAPS working jointly with local security companies and crime prevention wardens.

“Vehicle checkpoints, as well as stop and searches on major routes and around scrapyards and liquor outlets, will remain in place,” said Mashile.

Mashile said as the school holiday starts on March 6, and to the end of April, the community and law enforcement officials need to be more vigilant.

“It’s an all-hands-on-deck approach, we are leaving nothing to chance. We thank our communities for working closely with us during this hard period to prevent crime and trace wanted criminals by sharing tip-offs,” said Mashile.

He said the SAPS’ focus remains on serious and violent crime.

“Our police officers will remain on the ground to ensure that we heighten visibility as it is anticipated that there will be a lot of movement on our roads.”

Mashile said the Department of Basic Education (DBE) will try and prevent minimum incidents at school and encourage school safety.”

He said earlier this year SAPS also monitored the release of the matric results.
“Communities are further encouraged to continue to report any suspicious activity to their nearest police station or call 08600 101111.”
