Letter condemns cruelty over cat’s death after being attacked with boiling water

Editor, I am part of an NPO called Animal Sterilisation, with members residing in Bedfordview and Germiston.
We are often exposed to dreadful cruelty and unkindness by humans.

February 28 was one of those days. We were called by a family in Malvern East after their cat returned home with the most horrific injuries. These turned out to be because of boiling water being thrown over him!

All efforts by our vets at the Bedfordview Veterinary Hospital did not save little Cairo, who passed away on March 1.

Cairo was in unbelievable pain and did not deserve to die this way.

He was loved by his owners and his death has left a broken family.

Cats move around and there are many kinder ways of discouraging them from a property; boiling water is undeniably barbaric.

We appeal to these communities to look out for each other and their pets – just be kind, please.

We suggest people who fear for their cats build catios, thereby keeping them safe and allowing them a little outdoors.

Cruelty is not only happening to our cats – horrid things are being done to dogs, which I don’t plan to get into now.

Let’s be true to live by what one of our local schools taught my daughters, concern for others.
