Probus Club guests enjoy talk on Namaqualand’s flowers

Laurence Newman took the audience on a visual journey through Namaqualand’s famous spring flower season during the Bedfordview Probus Club’s October meeting.

Seasoned traveller Laurence Newman was the guest speaker at the Probus Club of Bedfordview’s open meeting on October 7, held at St George’s Village.

Newman’s presentation, titled ‘Namaqualand – Nature’s Vibrant Tapestry’, took the audience on a visual and descriptive journey through one of South Africa’s most breathtaking natural spectacles.

He recounted his trip to Namaqualand to witness the world-famous wildflower display.

The Namaqualand flower season spans from early August to the end of September, with its peak typically occurring in mid-to-late August, depending on rainfall and temperature. During this time, the usually arid region transforms into a vibrant carpet of wildflowers.

Newman travelled with a small group organised by Namakwa Toere, using Vanrhynsdorp as a base for daily excursions.

“Laurence’s slides, in glorious technicolour, showed a mind-boggling variety of flowers blooming in what is normally a parched desert. His eloquent commentary was well researched and passionately delivered,” said Annis.

The Probus Club’s next meeting will be held on November 4, featuring Jennifer Kimble, curator of the Oppenheimer Museum, as guest speaker.
