RAG warns of festive season crime spike, urges residents to stay vigilant
RAG Security has cautioned residents that crime is expected to rise over the festive season and has shared key safety tips for those travelling or staying at home.
The Residents Action Group (RAG Security) has warned that with the festive season around the corner, crime is expected to increase from now until after the new year.
The security NPO said criminals often strike in the early evening, and the most critical upcoming periods for crime risk are long weekends and public holidays, when people let their guard down.

For residents who are going away over the festive season, RAG offered these security tips:
• If you are going away for the holidays, check that all your security equipment is in good working order now, including your alarm system, beams, gate motor and cameras.
• Also check your electric fence. Trim overhanging branches and foliage around it shortly before you leave.
• Make sure that you do not leave signs that you are away and your house is unoccupied. This includes piles of mail and newspapers in the driveway, and rubbish bins left out.
• Ask someone reliable to check on your home and give them a set of keys in case of an emergency. Give them RAG’s number, too, so that they can call in any problems or concerns immediately.
• Ensure that all the windows are secure and that all the doors have been locked before you leave.
• Having curtains closed all day may appear suspicious, so leave them exactly as you would when you’re at home.
• Consider installing timer switches that turn the lights on and off.
• Remember to set your alarm when you leave.

RAG said that residents who will be staying home for the holidays should also be vigilant to protect themselves at home and when they are out.
These are safety and security tips to follow:
• Avoid carrying large amounts of cash when you are shopping, and be vigilant when using ATMs.
• Don’t have your wallet, purse or cellphone visible.
• Don’t leave valuables, including your handbag, in the trolley.
• Be alert when driving home from shopping centres or outings, especially when entering your property.
• To avoid becoming a victim of a follow-home robbery, do not wear expensive jewellery and watches in public places. Criminals have “spotters” in malls and coffee shops who target luxury brands, particularly Rolex watches.
• Invest in the best security measures and safety features for your home and use them.
• Make sure that your beams are activated early each evening – whether you are indoors or entertaining on your patio.
• Guests are no deterrent to criminals, and parties where gates are being opened and closed, people are coming and going, and security is lax, can attract opportunistic criminals.
• Set your alarm at night and every time you leave the house.
Residents should always report suspicious activity to RAG’s 24-hour control centre by calling 082 322 3333.
“Everyone can help prevent crime and keep our neighbourhood safer by reporting suspicious people, vehicles and activity.
“If something concerns you or you feel unsafe, call it in,” said RAG chairperson Anjela da Silva.
