St Andrew’s residents urged to sign petition over flooding issues

The lack of maintenance on stormwater drains seems to be the primary factor in floodings, and Ward 20 Clr Jill Humphreys appeals to residents to sign the Stormwater Petition.

Ward 20 Clr Jill Humphreys encourages more residents to sign the petition addressing the flooding issue.

On January 9, a few residents showed up at the St Christopher Park in St Andrew’s following Humphreys appeal for signatures on the Stormwater Petition.

“Repeat floodings occurr due to the lack of maintenance and upgrading of our stormwater drains,” said Humphreys.

The terms of the petition:
• We urgently petition MMC Andile Mngwevu of Roads and Transport to pay serious attention to the neglected stormwater drains in our city;
• A programme of regular maintenance must be prepared and implemented;
• In spite of the burgeoning densification of our suburbs, providing developer funding, minimal upgrades are executed.
• The result is repeated and serious flooding of our roads and properties.
• This is particularly prevalent due to the intensity of climate change storms.
• It is grossly unfair to expect property owners to invest while our failing infrastructure destroys;
• A significant budget needs to be allocated to upgrading and maintenance of our stormwater systems.
