Charity 5km walk to raise funds for local school

Lace up your walking shoes and gear up for a day of community fun and giving back as NPO Walking the Talk Foundation, in partnership with Macsteel, prepares to host a fundraising walk.

Set to be held on April 12, the event will take place at Herman Immelman Athletic Stadium (Germiston Stadium) and will benefit local school Galway Primary School.

This year Germiston City News is partnering with Walking the Talk Foundation as media partner and will keep the community updated and informed about the event as it draws closer.

Speaking to the founder and director of Walking the Talk Foundation, Dale van Blerk, he said it is all systems go.

He said this will be the first annual 5km fundraiser walk in support of Galway Primary School.

Last March, the NPO hosted a 5km walk in KZN and assisted West Park School.

Van Blerk said the event drew 400 participants.

Walking the Talk Foundation hopes to attract 2 500 community members to this year’s event, and medical and security personnel will be on site.

Tickets for the event will cost R190 and can be bought through Quicket.

Van Blerk said all proceeds from ticket purchases will go directly to Galway Primary School.

Additionally, the first 200 entrants will receive a free hat.

Although community members will be giving back and helping others, it will be a day of fun. Van Blerk explained that there will be various vouchers available.

He said a prize, a holiday to Lake Eland valued at R12 000, will also be up for grabs for community members who have the best banner.

According to van Blerk, the purpose of the event is to raise the funds to first equip and later build a future-ready Language Lab to help uplift and improve Galway Primary.

He said the lab will help the school elevate its language curriculum to an international standard.

“The lab will be a classroom of the future, it will be able to seat 45 learners and will have virtual reality solutions as well as smart board technology,” Van Blerk explained.

“The team are feeling very excited for the event, it’s going to be for a good cause, and the planning and preparation have been successful so far.”

Van Blerk said Galway Primary School was selected for the campaign after it was nominated by Macsteel, one of the NPO’s platinum partners. He explained that the school is a beneficiary of Macsteel.

Not only is Walking the Talk Foundation working with Macsteel, but several other corporates, including FloorworX, Pascon Paints, Parrot Products, Sonae Arauco, Pezula Access Scaffolding, Netcare Medicross, Fidelity ADT, Kasie FM, AOLC, Lake Eland, Malinga Scaffolding, Pento Brokers and Karkloof Canopy Tour.

He encouraged and welcomed corporate sponsors to get involved and help contribute to this worthy cause.

With the help of current and future partners, Van Blerk plans to announce the lab’s launch on the day of the walk.

“We want to be able to show the community what is possible by working together,” said Van Blerk.

Although there will be some road closures, Van Blerk said these are still being discussed with the relevant authorities and will be released once finalised.
