Edenvale and Bedfordview on alert as SAPS and CPF monitor June 30 protest hotspot rumours and marches

Edenvale and Bedfordview authorities are on heightened alert ahead of June 30 demonstrations, with SAPS, CPF structures and law enforcement coordinating responses as social media hotspot lists circulate across major Johannesburg transport corridors.

Residents and motorists in Edenvale and Bedfordview have been urged to remain alert and rely only on verified information as authorities prepare for planned demonstrations expected across Johannesburg on June 30.

Community policing forums and law enforcement agencies say they are closely monitoring developments after social media posts circulated alleged “hotspot” lists linked to major highways and industrial routes.

Among the circulating areas are sections of the N3 and N12 highway corridors, including Boksburg, Germiston and Alberton, as well as key logistics and freight zones linked to OR Tambo International Airport such as Isando, Kempton Park, Spartan and Jet Park. Authorities have not confirmed these lists and have urged the public not to treat them as official intelligence.

Local structures on heightened alert

In Edenvale, the CPF confirmed that SAPS, EMPD, private security companies and neighbouring safety structures are working in coordination ahead of potential disruptions.

“All relevant role players are monitoring the situation closely through official operational channels, including radio communications, media reports, and information received from our law enforcement and security partners,” said Fiona Pickett, executive public relations officer of the Edenvale CPF.

The CPF said access points in and out of the precinct would be closely monitored as part of coordinated safety and traffic planning.

In Bedfordview, SAPS said it and its partners were prepared for any demonstrations that may occur, although no confirmed incidents had been reported in the area at this stage.

“Although we are unaware of any planned demonstrations, the station and its partners are prepared,” said Bedfordview SAPS acting Visible Policing commander Warrant Officer Nomakhuwa Tshabile.

She said a coordinated security cluster involving SAPS, the Bedfordview CPF and private security had been activated to ensure readiness across the precinct.

Authorities warn against misinformation

Officials have urged residents not to circulate unverified hotspot lists or viral social media claims without confirmation from SAPS or official communications channels.

Authorities cautioned that the widespread sharing of unverified information may cause unnecessary alarm and confusion.

Johannesburg marches expected

Across Johannesburg, three legally approved marches are expected to take place in the inner city, Hillbrow and Midrand, with JMPD warning of possible traffic disruptions throughout the day.

Law enforcement agencies, including JMPD and SAPS Public Order Policing, will be deployed to monitor procession routes, manage traffic flow and ensure public safety.

Authorities have advised motorists to avoid affected routes where possible and to allow additional travel time.

President’s statement issued on June 29

President Cyril Ramaphosa on June 29 reiterated the constitutional right to protest, while urging that it be exercised peacefully and within the framework of the law.

He cautioned against intimidation, vigilantism and unlawful conduct, stressing that grievances must be addressed through democratic processes and lawful institutions.

The President also called for calm and responsibility, emphasising that South Africa’s constitutional order protects both freedom of expression and the safety and dignity of all people in the country.

As June 30 approaches, residents in Edenvale, Bedfordview and surrounding areas are urged to rely only on verified updates from SAPS, JMPD and official community safety structures.

Motorists should expect possible congestion in key transport corridors and plan travel accordingly, particularly during peak morning and afternoon hours.
