Bedfordview charity walk raises R400 000 for cancer support
The Shuffling Walking Team marked 15 years of community support by raising R400 000 for cancer and palliative care organisations.
For the past 15 years, the Shuffling Walking Team has brought people together and made a significant difference in lives across the community.
On July 26, scores of participants turned up en masse to support the Shuffling Walking Team Family Fun Walk for Cancer Awareness at the Bedfordview Country Club, raising a staggering R400 000.
Benefiting from this year’s bounty are East Rand Palliative Care (ERPC), The Breast Health Foundation, Stepping Stone Hospice and The Cows in support of CHOC, each receiving R100 000.

“We are incredibly grateful to the team,” said Jonquil Siepman, ERPC’s marketing and community engagement manager.
“It is difficult to put into words what it means to have people in our community who continue to give so freely of their time, energy and hearts. We feel enormously privileged to be one of the organisations they have chosen to support.”
Siepman explained that the donation will assist the home-based palliative care organisation to continue providing holistic care and support to patients and their families across the East Rand.
“The majority of our patients do not have medical aid, making community support and fundraising essential in helping ensure that care remains available to those who need it,” she said.

“This donation means we can continue walking into the homes of patients who need our support, managing pain and symptoms, supporting families and helping patients live with as much comfort and dignity as possible.”
She also thanked those who supported the event and those volunteering their time, which contributed to its ongoing success.
“When you see what has been accomplished, you realise just how powerful a caring community can be,” she said
“What these ladies have created is something very special,” Siepman said. “They do not do it for recognition. They do it because they genuinely care about people.
