Cyclists take part in memorial race for one of their own

Upholding the rights of cyclists and conveying a strong message to motorists that cyclists’ lives matter, more than 200 cyclists descended on Benoni to pay tribute to one of their own, Paresh Gordhan.

Celebrating Gordhan in a befitting manner, members of Vikings Cycling Club and cyclists from other clubs based in Johannesburg, Pretoria and East Rand took to the streets of Benoni from as early as 06:30, to ride in solidarity with Gordhan’s club, the Vikings Cycling Club.

The memorial ride saw his family taking part in a 30km course in the Benoni suburbs and surrounding areas.

Gordhan, who was affectionately known as ‘Pro’ to his cycling community, was killed in an accident on Great North Road on November 9 following a collision with a VW hatchback Polo while on a ride.

During the memorial event, which started in a sombre mood at Dingo’s pub and ended at the venue, cyclists described Gordhan as a cycling legend who had a cycling span of about 30 years.

The Lakefield cyclist was described as someone who wasn’t competitive, he apparently rode at his own pace without pressure.

The executive member of Vikings Cycling Club, Ashvin Jivan, said until recently their club which has about 60 members, had not experienced any serious injuries while on the road for the 40 years that they’ve existed.

Gordhan’s childhood friend, Bhaga Umesh, applauded the Vikings family for honouring him the way that they did.

“PRO was a legacy and we honoured that legacy today with great detail,” said Umesh.

Gordhan’s wife, Rekha shared that December 9 marked one month since her husband’s death.

“The motorist that killed my husband has ripped a family into pieces, we are still not coping. We miss him terribly,” said Rekha.

The Benoni City Times is awaiting comment from the police regarding investigations into Gordhan’s case.
