Local to tackle Berg River Marathon
Conlon will be competing in his 16th Berg River Canoe Marathon this July, after recently completing the 26 kilometre Watuni Vaal River race on June 21.
Bedfordview resident, Grant Conlon of the Gauteng paddlers from the Victoria Lake Canoe Club, will participate in the Berg River Marathon.
The race, which is the longest canoe race in South Africa, will take place on July 16 in Paarl in the Western Cape during mid-winter.
Conlon will face cold, rainy and windy conditions during the 240 kilometre race, which takes four days to complete. The competitors will paddle through the scenic mountain views, the Cape wineland areas and the race will finish at Velddrif on the Western Cape coast
“I have to make sure I am still alive, despite my hands freezing. This race is my annual challenge and I never know what to expect. There are changes in the weather and conditions, like flooding from the heavy rainfalls,” said Conlon.

Conlon also finished the 30 kilometre Klip River race, from Daleside to Meyerton on Sunday, July 6.
According to Conlon, an icy start prepared him well for the expected conditions at the Berg River Marathon. @BedfordJourno
