Woman racer places 4th nationally
"Nicole was the first woman rider in South Africa ever to stand on the podium in a National Championship Race."
Nicole van Aswegen, a local superbike racer, recently competed in the Super GP National Championship in Cape Town on the weekend of May 28 in the super-600 category.
Nicole is the only female competing at National level in South Africa at present and is also the fastest lady rider in Africa.
Ms van Aswegen, who normally rides with the number 21, rode with the number 72 in support of a fellow up-and-coming lady rider Cydney Farinho, who has taken ill and is unable to compete. Ms Farinho is the fastest regional woman rider in South Africa and Nicole rates Cydney as being the next national woman champion. Nicole rode for Cyndey to encourage her in her healing process.
Nicole was the first woman rider in South Africa ever to stand on the podium in a National Championship Race. She achieved this in Cape Town in 2015 when she managed third place. She hoped to achieve this again this year or better her position in honour of Cydney. Unfortunately she had mechanical issues with her Triumph Dayton 675R. Despite this, she rode the best time of her career on this track. She managed to finish eighth place in race one and came sixth place in race two, finishing in sixth place overall for the weekend.
Her results and points assisted in keeping her in fourth place overall in the National standings thus far in the championship for 2016.
